Why We Walk: Three Self-Advocates Share What They Want You to Know
Every October, hundreds of families, friends, volunteers, and community supporters gather for the DSANV Buddy Walk. Together, we celebrate individuals with Down syndrome, raise awareness, and support programs that empower people across Northern Virginia.
But behind every team, every donation, and every step taken is a person with their own story.
This year, we asked three incredible self-advocates one simple question:
"If you could tell your community one thing about Down syndrome, what would it be?"
Their answers remind us exactly why we walk.
Meet Eliza
For Eliza, having Down syndrome isn't something to hide - it's something to celebrate.
"Having Down syndrome is very cool! I have an extra chromosome that not a lot of people have. I can do anything anyone else can. There are a lot of programs for people with Down syndrome like Special Olympics and Arts for All. I love to ride thrilling roller coasters and can even get a FastPass at Disney!"
Eliza is actively building her future while giving back to her community. She volunteers at Inova Loudoun Hospital and the Loudoun County Animal Shelter, and she's currently a sophomore studying Early Childhood Development at Northern Virginia Community College.
Her story is a reminder that individuals with Down syndrome are pursuing their passions, contributing to their communities, and living full, meaningful lives.
Meet Sofia
Sofia believes one of the most important lessons is learning to believe in yourself.
"It is important to be a self-advocate and always try to be more independent - every day you can get stronger."
Her actions reflect those words.
Sofia volunteers at The Nativity Church in Burke, where she helps with childcare during Family Ministry meetings, serves as a greeter at the monthly Sensory Mass, and spends her summers assisting as an art teacher during Vacation Bible Camp.
"I like giving back to my church, and I like helping others."
Through her service, Sofia shows that leadership comes in many forms - and that every act of kindness makes a difference.
Meet Tyler
Tyler's message is one of determination.
"I have a full life, filled with things I love to do. I can do hard things because I am able to put in the work."
That work recently paid off in an extraordinary way.
This summer, Tyler represented Team Virginia at the Special Olympics USA Games, an incredible accomplishment that reflects his dedication and perseverance.
He's also passionate about advocating for others.
"I am glad to be part of the community. I am so thankful for my teachers, coaches, family, and friends for helping me accomplish my goals. I love being an advocate for people with disabilities."
Tyler reminds us that success is rarely achieved alone—and that a strong community helps everyone reach their full potential.
Every Story Matters
Eliza. Sofia. Tyler.
Three different people.
Three different journeys.
One shared message:
Individuals with Down syndrome have dreams, talents, goals, and so much to contribute to our communities.
At DSANV, we're proud to provide programs, resources, and opportunities that help individuals with Down syndrome build confidence, develop independence, discover new passions, and create meaningful connections throughout every stage of life.
Why We Walk
When you register for the DSANV Buddy Walk, start a team, volunteer, or make a donation, you're helping create more stories like these.
You're helping students pursue college.
You're supporting athletes, artists, volunteers, employees, self-advocates, and future leaders.
You're helping build a community where every individual with Down syndrome is seen for their abilities, celebrated for who they are, and empowered to thrive.
That's why we walk.
Because together, we create opportunities.
Because together, we build inclusion.
Because Together We Thrive.
Join us at the 2026 DSANV Buddy Walk and help us celebrate every story.
