Volunteer Spotlight: Giving Back to a Community That Feels Like Family

Every year, the DSANV Buddy Walk comes to life because of the incredible volunteers who generously give their time, energy, and hearts to our community. Whether they're greeting families, handing out T-shirts, directing participants, or cheering everyone across the finish line, volunteers help create an unforgettable day of celebration and inclusion.

For Liz Daulton, however, the Buddy Walk is much more than an event - it's a family reunion.

"Down syndrome has shaped my life in the best possible way," she shared. "I grew up with nine siblings (biological and adopted) with Down syndrome, and today my brother Tom lives with my family. I'm also fortunate to work with students with Down syndrome as a school-based occupational therapist. DSANV has been such an incredible source of support, connection, and advocacy. The Buddy Walk feels like spending the day with my extended family, and volunteering is one small way I can give back to a community that has given me so much."

It's a beautiful reminder that the Buddy Walk isn't just about raising funds - it's about bringing people together to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome and the community that surrounds them.

When asked about her favorite Buddy Walk memory, the answer came easily…

"Every year, my favorite part is watching participants cross the finish line. The excitement, huge smiles, and genuine pride on their faces are impossible to miss. It's one of those moments that makes the Buddy Walk so special and is such a beautiful reminder that the day is about celebrating every achievement - big or small."

Those moments are made possible because volunteers are there every step of the way.

If you've ever wondered whether volunteering is right for you, Liz’s advice is simple:

"Just do it! You don't need to know anyone or have any special experience - just a willingness to help and be part of something meaningful. Whether you're handing out shirts, directing people, or cheering on participants, every volunteer helps create a day that families remember all year long, and you'll spend the day surrounded by some of the kindest, happiest people you'll ever meet."

Volunteers are truly the heart of the Buddy Walk.

"The Buddy Walk simply wouldn't happen without volunteers," Liz explained. "They keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes so families can focus on celebrating, forming connections, making memories, and enjoying the day. Every volunteer helps create an event where people with Down syndrome are celebrated and families feel seen, supported, and welcomed."

When asked to finish the sentence, "The DSANV Buddy Walk is...", her response perfectly captured the spirit of the event:

"...one of my favorite events of the year - a celebration of inclusion, advocacy, community, and the incredible people who remind us every day that our differences make us stronger."
