Finding Community and Purpose: Sara’s Story
Sara has lived a life full of adventure. Now 31 years old, she was born in Perth, Australia while her family was serving abroad with the U.S. Foreign Service. She often jokes that she was born on a “beautiful spring day in November” - a reminder that seasons are reversed “Down Under.” Over the years, Sara’s family moved frequently, living in Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, France, and Belgium. While these experiences gave her a global perspective, they also meant frequent transitions and new beginnings.
Sara has always had a passion for art and art history. She studied the subject while attending the GMULife program at George Mason University and even completed internships with ten different Senate and House of Representatives offices during her time there. After graduating at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, Sara’s family moved overseas again when her father was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia. While living abroad was an incredible experience, it also meant Sara was unable to work and had fewer opportunities to connect with peers.
When Sara’s family returned to Northern Virginia two years ago, DSANV reached out to share information about a new Career Development Program. It was exactly what Sara needed - a way to reconnect with others and build skills for future employment. The program provided structure and purpose, helping Sara develop self-discipline while strengthening her professional skills.
Since then, Sara has become involved in several DSANV programs that support her independence, health, and social connections. She particularly enjoyed the 321Go!, which focused on nutrition, cooking, exercise, and building confidence. The program helped participants learn how to advocate for their own health and well-being while developing practical life skills. Sara also loves participating in the Cardinal CrossFit program, which she eagerly looks forward to each week.
Beyond skill-building programs, Sara has found joy in the many opportunities DSANV provides for connection and celebration. Events like World Down Syndrome Day and the Zumba Master Class have been especially memorable. At the Zumba event, Sara was invited on stage to dance - and she says she felt like a star.
For Sara, returning to the United States after years abroad was one of the most challenging transitions she had experienced. Without the structure of school or established routines, it was difficult to find direction. DSANV programs provided the framework she needed to reconnect socially, build confidence, and develop new friendships.
Sara’s family says that DSANV has made a meaningful difference in helping her find community and purpose again. Through programs that support employment, wellness, and social engagement, DSANV continues to create opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome to thrive.
For families navigating their own journeys, Sara’s family offers a simple message: DSANV provides a welcoming community and valuable resources that can support individuals with Down syndrome at every stage of life.
