Director of Development

POSITION:          Director of Development

STATUS:              exempt/30 hours per week

COMPENSATION:  $50,000 annual; (plus eligibility for bonus dependent exceeding financial targets)

REPORTS TO:     DSANV Board of Directors

LOCATION:        10467 White Granite Drive, Suite 320, Oakton, Virginia and remotely



Work Schedule:  Thirty hours per week; flexible schedule with some hours required during standard business hours to facilitate working with other staff; telework options with approval

Travel:  Local travel as required

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Director of Business Development is responsible for organizing, managing, and executing fundraising events for DSANV including but not limited to Buddy Walk (each October) and the annual 5K (each May) and other fundraising events as may be specified by the Board of Directors.  The Director of Business Development is responsible for engaging current and prospective members, donors, sponsors and grantors to maintain and increase the total amount of donations made to DSANV on an annual basis.  The Director of Business Development will be evaluated by the Board based on the results of development activities – e.g. grants awarded, meeting and exceeding financial goals for fundraising activities.  Bonus eligibility will be based on results of fundraising/grant writing efforts (e.g. funds raised exceeding targeting fundraising goals in a calendar year)

Specific duties include:

  • Fundraising and Event Planning – Organize, manage, and execute Buddy Walk and 5K with assistance from volunteers and staff as needed
  • Managing volunteers for fundraising events
  • Grant writing – monitor the Grant Watch database for applicable grant opportunities, research grant targets, document relevant grant target data to include organizational POCs and application deadlines, work with staff and other volunteers to prepare grant applications and provide status information on grant activities as needed
  • Donor management – Serve as point of contact for all donors; coordinate efforts to express gratitude for donors; work with staff and volunteers to continue to increase the number and quality of communications with current and prospective donors (individuals and businesses); document these communications in a donor management system; attract additional donors, and to increase the number and amount of recurring donations made to DSANV
  • Sponsor management – identify and communicate with potential corporate and organizational sponsors to increase sponsorships; document sponsor communications; and for events, follow up with sponsors afterwards to ensure DSANV delivered on all promises and to solicit feedback
  • Donor and Sponsor appreciation and acknowledgement – identify opportunities to show appreciation and incentivize future donations/sponsorships
  • Receiving and depositing donations via multiple platforms (SALSA, PayPal, Facebook and a variety of third-party match systems)
  • Fundraising campaign support – work with staff and volunteers to help design and execute focused fundraising campaigns of various sizes; collect data, communicate with participants, plan social media communications document progress and report status


Required Qualifications:

  • Event planning experience
  • Grant writing experience
  • Education and/or experience in one or more aspects of business development (i.e., fundraising, grant/proposal writing, donor management) for nonprofit organizations or corporations
  • Advanced social media marketing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience using Google platform, remote communications platforms such as RingCentral and Google Meet, Microsoft Office suite of tools or other spreadsheet tools

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting business development for a non-profit organization
  • Experience populating donor management databases/systems and creating reports from them to facilitate decision making
